Pet toy storage that does not take over the living room

← Back to the pet guides

CATS & DOGS / EVERYDAY ORGANIZATION

If the toy basket is overflowing, a bigger basket might only move the problem. Start by looking at what needs a place.

Sort before shopping

Gather the toys from around the room. Separate the ones currently in use from items awaiting cleaning or repair. Check each toy against its maker’s care and replacement instructions. Set damaged items aside where pets cannot reach them.

Separate cat and dog toys if you need different access arrangements. A container that suits one pet may not suit the other.

Pick one everyday storage spot

Choose a location close to where you use the toys, without blocking a walkway. Measure the available width, depth and height before comparing containers. If it goes on a shelf, check the clearance needed to lift it out.

Keep supervised-play items separate

Follow the instructions for each toy. Store items that require supervision out of reach when play is finished. Do not assume a pet-accessible basket is suitable for every toy.

Compare the container, not just the color

  • Cleaning: can you clean both the inside and the base?
  • Condition: are there loose parts, damaged edges or material your pet pulls off?
  • Access: should your pet reach this container, or should it stay in a cupboard?
  • Fit: does it hold the actual toys without spilling into the walkway?

Make putting things away easy

Keep the everyday system simple enough to use at the end of play. If you need several containers, label them by purpose: everyday toys, supervised play and cleaning. Revisit the arrangement when the collection changes.
