Beige SmartCat Ultimate Scratching Post with square base and tall sisal-covered column

If your cat wants to scratch upright, a dedicated post can make more sense than another piece of furniture with a short scratching section attached. The SmartCat Ultimate keeps the idea simple: a tall sisal surface on a square base.

What this review covers

Research-based assessment of the beige SmartCat Ultimate, model 3832, ASIN B000634MH8. Sources were checked on October 28, 2026. We have not tested stability, wear or a cat’s response.

Measure the base before choosing a corner

Amazon lists the post as 16 × 16 × 32 inches. Pioneer Pet’s catalog gives a slightly different footprint of 15.75 × 16 inches, with the same 32-inch height. Allow a full 16-inch square when planning, then confirm the delivered base size. Leave room for your cat to approach and use it.

That square base is the real space commitment. A narrow-looking column can be misleading in a photograph. Tape out the footprint beside the sofa or in the corner you have in mind, and make sure it does not block a door or the route through the room.

Why this is an established option

The matching Amazon listing gives September 29, 2004 as its first-available date. It was in stock when checked. That long listing history fits our preference for products with a track record, although it does not establish that every component has remained unchanged or guarantee future supply.

A scratching post, not a complete cat tree

This model focuses on upright scratching. It does not give you the enclosed sleeping spot or several climbing levels of a larger tree. That is a useful distinction if scratching is the problem you need to solve and you already have a suitable resting place.

If your cat consistently chooses horizontal cardboard instead, buying a tall post on reputation alone may disappoint. Consider the surfaces and positions your cat already chooses. We cannot predict whether a particular cat will use this one.

What we like about the idea

The straightforward design makes its purpose easy to judge. You are buying a sizeable vertical scratching surface without trying to fit shelves and a den into the same footprint. It is also easier to compare a single base measurement with your available floor space than the overhangs of a multi-level tree.

What to check before ordering

Check the exact model, included assembly parts and instructions. Assemble it on a level surface, check for wobble before use and inspect it as it wears. We have not verified a replacement sisal panel or post supply for this version, so do not assume it can be refurbished indefinitely.

Our verdict

A strong shortlist candidate when you want a dedicated upright scratching spot and can spare the base area. It is a less convincing choice if your main need is a sleeping perch, a hideaway or a horizontal scratcher. Buy for the job your cat needs, rather than treating “Ultimate” as a promise.
